Sometimes I feel like a pigeon that is being trained to do tricks in return for kernels of corn.
Trick. Like. Trick. Like. Clink clink clink go the kernels. Peck peck peck.
Plop, plop, fizz, fizz…oh what a relief it is. Watch the birdie jump rope! Like like like like like like like. Out drop the kernels. I repeat.
I feel like I am in High School again, squabbling for the attention of the cool kids. This kind of behavior reinforcement flies in the face of one of my core beliefs, or what I want to think is one of my core beliefs, best summarized by Katie Byron’s quote below:
If I had a prayer, it would be this: God, spare me from the desire for love, approval, or appreciation. Amen.
Byron Katie
Reality check: I am not spared from this desire. Not even close. I would dance the boogaloo in a pink tutu for a kernel of corn. Pathetic. It is yet another prayer God did not answer. Santa Clause did not deliver. The rescue mission, as always, depends on me.
Time to stop.
